Participants in this initiative will receive a fixed compensation of €0.04 per kilometre travelled per passenger, a measure aimed at promoting shared use of private vehicles and reducing parking congestion and pollutant emissions. This model is part of energy-saving strategies supported by the Ministry for Ecological Transition through Energy Saving Certificates, which make it possible to monetise actions that help reduce energy consumption and environmental impact.
The rector, José Capilla, has highlighted the importance of this strategic decision, stating that “with this new system, we are taking a qualitative leap towards smarter, more accessible and sustainable mobility. We want commuting to campus to be more comfortable, affordable and environmentally friendly.”
In this regard, he has underlined that “UPV is committed to leading innovative solutions that improve the daily lives of our community and contribute to our environmental goals. This measure makes carpooling an attractive and common option.”
Meanwhile, the Vice-Rector for Sustainable Campus Development, Débora Domingo, has pointed out that “although public transport or active sustainable mobility is already the preferred option for many people travelling to UPV campuses, when the car is chosen, sharing it brings environmental, economic and social benefits: fewer greenhouse gas emissions, less traffic congestion, lower costs (even some benefits with this initiative), less stress and greater social cohesion within the UPV community.”
The programme will be supported by a mobile application that will allow users to register journeys, connect with others interested in sharing a vehicle and automatically manage compensation. The selected tool is Tribbu, a platform specialised in shared mobility and energy savings certification.
